Is “Being Mary Jane” just TV?

Mara-Brock-Akil-Talks-Running-Your-Own-Show

I watched every episode of Being Mary Jane and I am ready to talk about it. I started writing this long thing on my iPad but thought I would start over. I posted on Facebook that I observed that many women tend to believe that professional success excuses them from making smart relationship choices. There were a myriad of responses, but one one in particular stood out. A good friend of mind posted “Just remember it’s TV.”

It reminded me of all of the times I have gotten so caught up in a movie or show that I had to remind myself that what I was watching wasn’t real. But, the statement made me thinking deeply about how real Mary Jane Paul is when I look across the small circle of female friends I have. First and foremost, contrary to popular belief, it’s hard to find lasting love and some people will go to extremes to ensure they aren’t missing the opportunity to be in love.

Anyway, I just wanted to point out the things I thought were topics, whether just TV or not, are important topics the show is bringing to our conscious:

1. Extramarital affairs and the way people who participate in them attempt to legitimize their behavior….
2. The difficulty of being a person of color in diverse and non-diverse professions and environments.
3. The struggle to juggle the things that matter in life like family, friends, love, career and other stuff that comes as a result of having material wealth.
4. The politics of building and maintaining work relationships.
5. The realities about suicide confirmed via statistics and studies where people of color, professionals and successful people are concerned.

So, considering the time African Americans spend watching television, the perspective that TV is an art form and the genius of Mara Brock Akil, it may be safe to say that the intent of this show is to be more than just TV… but another vehicle that keeps important discussions in our consciousness.

BET is Getting it Right! Do you agree?

More than a few times, BET has given the conscience Blacks reason to shake their heads. Perhaps, it’s partially because White people fell in love with “our” genres of music and were willing to pay for our products more than we were… so in return, their influence controlled our programming. I don’t have any research to prove this theory, but I am sure I could cook up some if anyone wants to argue. Either way, you get the point. BET failed the middle class. Their programming got more and more ignorant. The reality shows failed to portray our people doing positive things, aside from signing and preaching.

I watched the BET Honors on Monday night and realized that this is one of the greatest products BET has been putting out over the past few years. Programming like “Don’t Sleep,” “Celebration of Gospel” and “Black Girls who Rock” feature our people’s commitment to service and philanthropy! While I would like to see more positive images of Black men, I am pleased with the direction of the network. It’s clear that there is an effort being put forth to equalize what’s going out over the airwaves.

What are your thoughts? What is BET doing right? What are they doing wrong? Where can they improve?

Hmmm… BET executive Becomes CNN’s Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer

Diversity in any board room is a good thing… but anybody who works at BET in one of those office on the top floor (Assuming BET has a building) worries me. I am not a fan of CNN in the first place. Now that I got that out…. on to the news.

Congratulations are in order for former BET Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer at BET Janet Rolle. She will join CNN as their Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. At BET, Rolle led brand strategy and marketing efforts, including on-air promotions, off-channel and digital marketing as well as affiliate and trade marketing.

Even though I am critical of BET, rolle seems to have her stuff together. In addition to her work at BET, she led marketing strategy and execution for  AOL, MTV Networks and HBO. Congrats!

Steve Harvey taps ‘Real Housewive’s’ Miss Lawrence for New BET Show

[blackmediaSCOOP] This should be interesting! Comedian/talk show host Steve Harvey inked a deal with Real Housewives of Atlanta star Miss Lawrence. “She’ll” be joining the cast of ‘The Steve Harvey Project,’ which airs on BET’s Centric.

We’re told the feisty cross-dressing hairdresser, stylist and singer will host a segment titled ‘Spilling the Tea with Miss Lawrence,’ offering entertainment tidbits, celebrity gossip, red carpet commentary and fashion/beauty critiques. Miss Lawrence is really Lawrence Washington, who lives in Atlanta and owns Lawrence Washington Atlanta salon. Last year, “he” released the song ‘Closet Freak,’ produced with Grammy Award winner Kandi Burruss, which has become an underground sensation.

‘Spilling The Tea” is scheduled to air Tuesdays and Thursdays on ‘The Steve Harvey Project.”

R. Kelly is the MAN! He’s got a slightly dirty past but who doesn’t! He can SANG! Watchhis performance HERE!

I should also mention that he is keeping up with these youngins with this stage presence! I am loving the whole throwback look!

Song of the Year: B.o.B “Nothing on You” … I like this song so I agree with this choice although that Alicia Keys song is FIRE!

Taraji and Terrance break out in a dance contest which, surprisingly, was pretty entertaining. They have good chemistry… although I prefer when Taraji isn’t so… ‘hood!

I’m not really into Ne-Yo’s live performances. I wish I had better things to say… but I don’t. You might enjoy. CLICK HERE for his performance.

Anita Baker has one of those voices that can’t be duplicated. Sorry ladies. I do usually enjoy Chrissette and Tamia! They did well. [CLICK HERE FOR PERFORMANCES]

I love Faith… but she was super pitchy tonight! They shuld have let me put this Anita Baker Tribute together! What were they thinking with all of these subpar performances. I need Mary J. to show up in the future! This video messaging will not be enough! [CLICK HERE FOR PERFORMANCES]

El Debarge was doing his good screaming tonight! I don’t want to say anything negative so I’ll stop! [CLICK HERE FOR PERFORMANCES]

Erykah Badu always saves the day for me! She has never had a poor performance in my book! I just love her. Never sure what she is wearing but that is what makes her, her! [CLICK HERE FOR PERFORMANCES]

Wolf learns how to Dougie.  I still don’t know how. Soul train is giving awards to Eminem… my, how times have changed.

I appreciate Cee-Lo Green’s artistry! I think he is stellar. I’m never entirely sure what he is wearing but he likes it.. and if he likes it, I love it! [CLICK HERE FOR PERFORMANCES]

Something happened so I missed the entire Tank performance… Not sure what happen but since this is BET, I have low expectations. SWV looked great! They introduced Jazmine Sullivan.

I enjoy Bruno Mar’s voice. It’s different. Did you enjoy her performance? Great song, too!

Ron Isley got a much better tribute. Seems like they tried to find popular folks as opposed to skilled people. Now, I’m not saying Kesyhia Cole is skilled. She did better than she normally does though. I’ll give her that!

Oh… Ron Isley said that ever hit record he had, he prayed about it first. I would like to hear the prayer he prayed asking God to bless “Between the Sheets.”

It’s been good to see Eric Benet back at it. Halle ruined him a bit!

I enjoyed Peabo Bryson, Jeff Osbourne and Freddie Jackson! Didn’t know Freddie was so… so… I don’t know. Maybe I just hadn’t been paying attention!

I didn’t even recognize Bilal! Did you?

2010 BET AWARDS LIVE BLOGGING

1. The indestructible Kanye West begins the show with a performance of his new single, “Power.” Kanye is legendary. I like his presence! He reminds me of the saintly Mother Mary M. Welch of the California Northwest Jurisdiction of the Church of God in Christ. Let’s give him a hand praise!

42004pcn_rihanna112. Queen Latifah comes off a piano looking stunning! Not sure what she was talking about though! They show pictures of all the people that said no, which is why she ends up hosting. She started singing! She says something about Usher wanting older women! She tells Trey Songz to take his shirt off. She did a little “flat” singing. Then she changed into some “hip hop gear.” She rapped a tad. I’m impressed. Not sure I want to hear anymore though! Continue reading “2010 BET AWARDS LIVE BLOGGING”
